Notion templates are the most-recommended first digital product for a reason: no filming, no writing a book, no course platform. If you already run your life or your work in Notion, you have probably built the product without noticing.
The trouble starts at the selling. Search "Notion template" and you get thousands of results, a large share of them free, many of them good. A buyer's default is not "which one should I buy" — it is "why would I pay for this at all".
Everything below is about answering that question.
What people actually pay for
Free templates are abundant. Paid templates still sell. The gap between them is not features — it is these four things.
- 01
A specific job, for a specific person
"Second Brain" competes with every free template ever made. "Client pipeline for freelance video editors who invoice in INR" competes with almost nothing, and the person who needs it recognises themselves in the title. Narrow is not a smaller market; it is a reachable one.
- 02
Decisions already made
A free template gives you empty databases and leaves the thinking to you. A paid one arrives with the properties, views, statuses and formulas already decided by someone who has done the job. You are selling judgment, not blocks.
- 03
Filled-in example data
An empty template is homework. One that opens with three realistic example records shows the buyer how it is meant to be used in five seconds. This single thing does more for perceived value than any amount of visual polish.
- 04
A path to actually using it
Most templates are duplicated once and abandoned. A short setup walkthrough — even a five-minute video — is the difference between a refund request and a testimonial.
Build it so it survives a duplicate
Notion templates break in predictable ways when someone else duplicates them. Checking these before you sell saves you the support thread.
- Linked databases can point at your original. After duplication, views may still reference the source rather than the buyer's copy. Duplicate into a fresh account and check every view.
- Relations and rollups are the fragile part. These are what break most often on duplication, and they are the hardest for a non-technical buyer to repair.
- Strip your own data. Real client names, revenue figures and personal notes have shipped inside templates more than once. Do a deliberate pass.
- Check permissions on every embed and sub-page. A linked page you forgot to make public is a broken template for everyone.
- Give it a cover and icons. Cheap, and it is the entire first impression.
Packaging: what the buyer receives
You are not delivering a file. You are delivering a duplicate link plus whatever makes it usable. A package that consistently outperforms a bare link:
| Include | Why it earns its place |
|---|---|
| The duplicate link | The product itself |
| A one-page "start here" | Removes the blank-page moment that kills adoption |
| A 5-minute setup walkthrough | Converts a duplicate into actual use |
| Filled example data | Shows the intended shape without explanation |
| A short changelog or version note | Signals it is maintained, not abandoned |
On DigiOne the duplicate link is delivered as a post-purchase link rather than a file, so buyers keep access to the current version and you can update the destination without re-issuing anything. That mechanism is what DigiOne calls a post-purchase link.
Pricing a template
The reflex is ₹99 to compete with free. It does not work, because you are not competing with free on price — you cannot win that — you are competing on specificity and on the time saved.
| Shape of product | Typical band | What justifies it |
|---|---|---|
| Single-purpose template | ₹299 – ₹799 | One job, done properly, with example data |
| System of linked templates | ₹799 – ₹1,999 | Several databases that work together, plus a walkthrough |
| Template + setup session | ₹2,500 – ₹7,000 | Your time, and a guarantee it ends up working |
The method — price from the outcome, not the number of databases — is in how to price a digital product.
Where the buyers are
Template buyers are unusually concentrated, which is good news — you do not need a large audience, you need to be visible in a few specific places.
- Show the template being used, not the template. A screen recording solving a real problem outperforms a gallery of pretty screenshots, because the problem is what the buyer recognises.
- Answer the question publicly. Wherever people in your niche ask how to organise something, answer properly and mention that you packaged it. The answer earns the mention.
- Build in the open. Posting the process while you build gives you weeks of content and an audience that is already waiting when you launch.
- Let buyers sell it. Templates are highly shareable inside a workplace or a community — an affiliate program fits this category better than almost any other.
- One link, one offer. Template buyers arrive from a single post with a single intent; a link-in-bio page offering eight things wastes that.
Support, updates and refunds
Templates generate more support than any other digital product, because the buyer has to operate them. Three things keep that manageable:
- 01Write the FAQ from your actual inbox. After ten sales you will know the three questions. Answer them on the sales page and they stop arriving.
- 02Say what "updates" means before you are asked. Free updates forever, or for a year, or none — any of these is fine. Not deciding is the problem.
- 03Refund quickly and ask why. For a ₹599 product, arguing costs more than refunding. The reason they give is the fix for the next twenty buyers.
The refund mechanics are handled on the refunds screen. If you are selling in India and wondering about tax on any of this, take it to a chartered accountant — what DigiOne records per sale sits on the taxes and statements screen.
Nobody pays for a template. They pay to skip the two days of deciding how it should be set up.
Do it in DigiOne.
